Does any bronze casting of Rodin's "The Call to Arms" exist that was cast and finished by the artist himself?
There are many "authorized reproductions" out there - that is, castings that were made from Rodin's plasters after his death (with his pre-death permission). I'm wondering if a finished version of the sculpture was ever cast in bronze before his death. If anyone has any info on this, or knows of books that contain this information (dates of particular castings, etc.), that'd be helpful. Also helpful: does anyone have an idea of when the version of the sculpture in the Portland Art Museum was cast? The web site says "early 20th century" but doesn't go into specifics.
Anyway, many thanks to anyone with information. Note: anything easily Googlable or Wikipedia-able isn't really helpful - I've Googled the hell out of this one!
Portland Art Museum curators show have as exact information about both of your questions: about their piece and about other castings.
If they do not, then the Rodin Museum in Philadelphia should be able to field questions with detailed date information. http://www.rodinmuseum.org/
