How do I get the chiming on my mantle clock to align with the correct time?
I have an old mantle clock with two winders, operated by a key, in the face. Keeps time perfectly, tics, but the problem is that the amount of chimes do not marry up with the correct time. So, when at 1.00 when I should only get one chime I am getting 8 chimes, and at 8.00 I am only getting 1 chime etc. How do I get the amount of chimes to align with the correct time? The clock is art deco style, and has 'odo france' in small print on the face.
Mechanical clocks have the minute hand geared to the movement in a solid fashion while the hour hand has a slip feature to its attachment to the clock. The next time the clock strikes a specific hour like 4, move the hour hand to the number four on the face of the clock. That should match you chimes and hour hand. You can do this any time the clock strikes an hour.
Do not try to move the minute hand in any direction other than clockwise. If you try to "back it up" you can strip the gears. The hour hand can be move in either direction without harming the clock movement.
