Does the flood of photo realistic paintings from China on eBay help or hurt art?
Even though most of the listings claim that they are "hand painted" by Chinese artists, the works appear to be too "photo realistic" to be hand painted and are far more likely to be giclee prints made from photographs (a large proportion are female nudes).
As an eBay Superseller in the art/painting category, I believe the imported artworks you mentioned have greatly hurt the artists and art on eBay.
Before the flood of Chinese and other mass-production listings at about the year 2000, the average eBay artist had only other, similar artists as competition. Many independent artists were able to support their families with their eBay sales. Now, the independent artists on eBay are struggling to hang on. Thousands have left eBay, and these imports are one reason.
First of all, the addition of thousands of 99 cent listings by the Chinese (and similar) makes it more difficult and frustrating for the eBay buyer for find the original art piece (my auctions!) they are looking for.
Secondly, we independent artists cannot possibly compete with the importers' 99 cent pricing. The Chinese auctions make their money by adding an extra ten or twenty dollars to the shipping price. In China, the canvas and materials are much cheaper, as well as the artist's wages. In America, the stretchers for a small canvas run about 6 or 7 dollars, before canvas, paint, the artist's time, and promotion costs (eBay and Paypal take 8 to 10 percent of sale).
Thirdly, to answer your question about quality, these Chinese works are mass produced on a production line. The picture in the auction is a sample. Often the auction contains words like "your painting may differ slightly from the picture," because each painting is done in large quantities and many sizes for the American and European markets. Yes, they are "hand-painted," but the background may be done (slapped on quickly) by one artisan, the fruit by another, the vase by a third, and so on.... like the assembly lines of a car manufacturer, but without the care and quality control.
Unfortunately, we Americans like a deal and these import works look like a bargain. We are also used to mass produced objects available in our stores. However, for a few dollars more, you can get an original, one-of-a-kind painting on eBay from an independent artist using better quality materials and having a higher artistic skill level.
